The film revolves around five individual characters and the events in their life, that, on the one hand, changes everything in their respective lives, which the film's title refers to, and, on the other hand, also brings together these people. It is an anthology film, that contains two parallel moving stories, which are connected by a freak accident in Chennai. A young architect, falls in love with a young beautiful pediatric doctor, runs after her and tries to convince her to marry her, while, simultaneously, a morose ex-football coach troubles a software engineer by vowing to kill his eight-year-old son. How these characters get connected and confronted through the accident forms the crux of the story.
After several postponements due to various reasons, the film was finally released worldwide on 15 May 2009 to mixed reviews and performed averagely at the box office. Nearly one year later, the film is being dubbed to be released in Telugu under the same title.
Eventhough this film is a remake of film 21 Grams, Vishnuvardhan made lot of changes on original story line for Indian Cinema.
Plot
The film opens with a bully fight between two individuals on a rainy night in a deep, dark forest. In the opening scene, a title card is presented with a Upanishad quote: "Death is just the beginning of another life". It follows a flashback
Karthik (Arya) is a young happy-go-lucky carefree architect, who, one day, comes across a young beautiful girl, Sandhya (Trisha Krishnan) in a go-karting race. Karthik immediately falls in love with Sandhya and, having decided, that she is the right girl for him, wants to convince her to marry him. Sandhya is a pediatric doctor and became so due to her love for children. Karthik, after finding out several information about her, first arranges a meeting with her, by pretending to her, that she had caused a car accident and damaged his car. When that approach, however, fails, he eventually goes to the hospital, where Sandhya works, becoming a regular visitor there and making all kinds of possible efforts to woo her. Sandhya, however, has other interests and shows no signs of reciprocating his love, since she believes, Karthik is too carefree and not serious about life, who, nonetheless, keeps following her and trying still to convince her. When, one day, Sandhya's parents tell her about her to-be-fixed marriage, she, finally recognizes, that Karthik is apparently the right boy and gradually falls for him, slowly developing a deep love for him. She wholeheartedly agrees with the marriage.
Simultaneously, a morose mysterious man, Eashwar (J. D. Chakravarthy), always moving around with the Rottweiler dog Bruce, goes to see Naushad (Indrajith), a software engineer, who happily lives with his eight-year-old son Imaan (Rohan Shiva). Naushad, a few months ago, had hit Eashwar's wife, Gheetha (Anu Haasan), and his son, Naveen, to death in a car accident. Eashwar, apparently mentally disturbed, who keeps murmering, that his son has died, thinks, that the death of his family members was not an accident, but a planned murder by Naushad and that, therefore, he is solely responsible for their death. Eashwar keeps following Naushad, telling that Naushad doesn't understand the pain of losing a child, that he was undergoing, and threatens him, that he will feel the same pain only, when his own son dies. When a workmate of Naushad informs him, that Eashwar had visited him and requested information about Naushad, and tells him to be aware, he and his son escape to a place of his friend, which is located at the Elliots beach in Chennai.
Meanwhile, Karthik and Sandhya, who do spend time together, happily enjoying life, are ready for the marriage and make plans for the future. Karthik, then, suddenly requests Sandhya to postpone their marriage for a year, but in which he meets with disapproval, since Sandhya persists on marrying at the earliest possible date. To solve this problem, they decide to hold a cycling race across the Elliots beach road, dealing, that the winner may make the decision, which has to be accepted by the other person. At the same time, Imaan and his friend fly a kite on the terrace of Naushad’s friend. Suddenly Imaan faints and falls, which distracts the boys, who were around him, and they let the kite slip and fly away, the thread cuts loose. Sandhya, who is ahead of Karthik and leading the race, rides straightly into the kite thread, which cuts her neck, injuring her fatally. She eventually dies in the hospital because of severe blood loss.
Six months later, Sandhya's father visits Karthik, who is devastated, grief-stricken, trying to convince himself in vain. Sandhya’s father then informs Karthik, that even after death Sandhya has saved the life of a child, since her heart has been transplanted into a boy, who incidentally happens to be Naushad’s son Imaan. Karthik becomes emotional and is overjoyed, that at least one part of his love is alive and goes to meet Naushad and Imman. He finds out, that they’ve left their home in Chennai and moved to Munnar in Kerala. He travels to Munnar to meet them there and finally gets to see them and feels happy again.
Meanwhile Eashwar, who had followed Karthik, arrives in Munnar as well, where he meets a car mechanic Sajid, who played professionally football with Eashwar, a few years ago and who allows Eashwar to stay at his home.
Karthik a last time goes to see father and son, before he wants to leave for Chennai, when then suddenly a car tries to hit Imman to death. Karthik, who was just readying to go home, comes back and is able to save Imman. Shocked by that incident, Karthik doesn’t believe, that it was merely an accident and wants Naushad to tell the truth, who has been admitted to hospital after having been injured in the accident. Karthik then gets to know about Eashwar, who was the man in the car, and his intentions. Eashwar has bought the same car, which “killed” his family members and seeks revenge for their death by killing Naushad’s son Imaan in return to “equal it”. Karthik then decides to take Imaan along him to a nearby place, where he had stayed before, promising Naushad, that he will protect and look after Imaan.
Subsequently, Karthik tries to befriend Imaan, who dislikes Karthik, doesn’t want to stay with him, but rather with his father and doesn’t obey him. When they, later, go by car, Karthik and Eashwar encounter themselves and Karthik, somehow, finds himself threatened by Eashwar. It follows a cat and mouse chase, whereas Eashwar wants to dispose of Karthik to get to Imaan and to kill him. Sajid sees, Eashwar chasing Karthik and offers to help by hiring people, who will kill both silently without mentioning Eashwar’s and Sajid’s names.
How Karthik protects Imaan and saves him from Eashwar as a tribute to Sandhya and his love forms the crux of the story.
Velan , a young boy, lives with his younger half-brother Balan, stepfather (Nassar) and mother (Revathi) in Kattuppakkam in the Tirunelveli district. His stepfather is always partial towards Balan which constantly angers Velan.
Fifteen years later, a gang of robbers steal money from a bank and cause property damage while entering Kattuppakkam, when Velan (Silambarasan), now a cop going by the name "Osthe" Velan, apparently tries to recover the money by beating up the robbers. It becomes clear later that he keeps the money for himself, using it to buy new police jeeps and dividing it among his fellow cops (Santhanam, Thambi Ramaiah, Mayilsamy and Vaiyapuri). Velan still lives with his family and does not have a good relationship with his stepfather and Balan (whom he bullies at times).
Balan (Githan Ramesh) is in love with a girl called Nirmala (Saranya Mohan) whose father (Nizhalgal Ravi) opposes their relationship. Osthe Velan, meanwhile, falls in love with a girl called Neduvaali (Richa Gangopadhyay), whom he chances upon while chasing a gang of thugs.
Boxer Daniel (Sonu Sood), an aspiring politician and goon, meets Velan and tells him that the people he beat up and stole the money from are party workers and that they were getting money for the party. Velan is unperturbed, and dismisses him flatly. Balan asks his father to arrange his marriage with Nirmala, but his father refuses saying that he needs money to repay the loans he took to make his factory so he needs his son to marry a rich girl. Balan, in desperate need of money, steals it from Velan's cupboard, but is caught red-handed by his mother. He tells his mother that he intends to give the money to Nirmala's father, who in turn will return the money after marriage through dowry. Although his mother refuses, he takes the money and gives it to Nirmala's father.
Meanwhile, Velan meets Neduvaali and proposes marriage. She rejects it saying that she has to look after her father (VTV Ganesh), who is always drunk and that she cannot marry while he is alive. Velan then comes home to find his mother dead. He tries to make peace with his stepfather, as he is the only family left, but his stepfather says that Velan is not part of the family anymore.
Velan is then attacked at the railway station by Daniel's men, when he is with Neduvaali and her father, but, he beats up all of them in a fight.
He sees Balan buying a horse and chariot, though he does not suspect that Balan stole the money. Balan tells him that he is getting married to Nirmala and invites Velan to the marriage. Velan tries to convince Neduvaali's father to give his daughter's hand in marriage to him and to stop drinking. Neduvaali's father accepts and after Velan leaves, he plunges into a lake and commits suicide, as he knows that his daughter will not marry anyone while he is alive. Velan takes Neduvaali to Balan's exuberant wedding and, honoring his mother's wish that her elder son be married first, marries Neduvaali in an impromptu ceremony. Nirmala's father feels disgraced and cancels the wedding.
Balan beats up one of the workers in his factory due to a small accident. The worker goes to the police station along with his mother to file a complaint. But instead Velan beats up Balan in public, thus disgracing him. Daniel decides to take advantage of the situation and suspend Velan. He takes Balan and his father to the police station. But Balan's father resolves the situation by accepting an apology from Velan. Velan meets the minister leading Daniel's party (Vijayakumar) who also dislikes Daniel. They both come to an agreement to keep Daniel in control. Velan adulterates the breweries of Daniel due to which many people fall ill and Daniel is blamed. Daniel is confronted by Velan who openly reveals to him that he adulterated the breweries.
To take revenge, Daniel burns Balan's factory. Balan's father gets a heart attack due to shock and is hospitalized. Balan, in desperate need of money for his father's treatment agrees to do anything for Daniel, without realizing that it was Daniel who burnt his factory. Daniel gives him a task telling him to deliver a crate of mangoes to the minister' house. But, unknown to Balan, there is a bomb in it. After he leaves the house, it explodes, killing the minister and many innocents. Daniel gives Balan a task to kill Velan. Balan, knowing that he would not do it, accepts it and meets Velan. He confesses to Velan that he was sent to kill him by Daniel. He reveals to Velan that Daniel made him plant the bomb unknowingly. Velan forgives him and reconciles with his stepfather.
Balan meets Daniel, who thinks that Balan killed Velan and reveals to Balan that he had killed Balan's mother. Daniel is then informed that Velan is arriving with a huge police force. Balan reveals to Daniel that he did not kill Velan. In a final battle, Velan arrives and takes down all the goons and rescues Balan, leading to a final fight with Daniel. After Balan reveals to Velan that Daniel killed their mother, the two kill Daniel by forcing smoke through his mouth.
In a happy ending, Velan gets Balan married to Nirmala in the presence of their father.
The soundtrack of Osthe was scored by S. Thaman. Silambarasan revealed that composer Yuvan Shankar Raja, who he generally collaborates with, had suggested to sign Thaman as the music director.[26] Initially planned to be released on October 6,[27] the audio launch was pushed to October 19, 2011.[28] The lyrics were written by Vaali and Yugabharathi, while Silambarasan penned the lyrics for the song "Pondaati", which would revolve around a "husband’s praises for his wife."[29] The equivalent version to the chartbusting "Munni Badnaam Hui" from the original was named "Kalasala".[27]Shruti Haasan was reported to have rendered her voice in "Kalasala",[30] but the rumours were denied and instead veteran singer L. R. Eswari had sung the song[31]. "Osthe" was Thaman's first combo with Dharani who usually collaborates with Vidyasagar.
The soundtrack generally received mixed reviews from music critics. P.G Devi from Behindwoods gave 3 out of 5 and stated that "Osthi lives up to its huge expectations with generous mass entertainers like 'Kalasala Kalasala', 'Pondatti' and 'Neduvaali'. It will be a top musical grosser, alluring listeners with its hits".[32] Prakash Upadhyaya from Oneindia.in praised Thaman's music sense and claimed that it is Simbu's Diwali treat.[33]Indiaglitz also gave a positive verdict writing that "'Kalasala' the Tamil equivalent of Bollywood chartbuster 'Munni' fulfills all expectations, and even exceeds at some places. If your choice is an album that is a collection of mass numbers, there can't be better pick than Osthi. Go and grab it".[34] Pavithra Srinivasan fromRediff also complimented the soundtrack's "mildly appealing combination of masala beats", giving 2.5 out of 5.
